Art
Inspired by the extraordinary artistic and political potential of new participatory technologies, the art strand of FutureEverything 2012 presents work that enable us to see the possibilities of such connectivity. It celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Mass Observation Movement and the UN International Year of Co-operatives.
The FutureEverything art programme is split into three parts: the FutureEverybody art exhibition at MOSI, participatory artworks from Blast Theory, Lawrence Epps and more on the streets of Manchester, and the Handmade digital craft fair at Victoria Baths.
FutureEverybody Art Exhibition
Eighteen international artists from sculptural, video, sound and digital fields display their work responding to the FutureEverybody festival theme. The exhibition is hosted in the 1830 Warehouse at MOSI, a Grade 1 listed building which forms part of the Museum of Science and Industry’s site in Castlefield.
16 May – 10 June. MOSI. Learn more.
Participatory Art
Immersive theatre group Blast Theory premiere ‘I’d Hide You’, a game that connects virtual worlds, video streaming and performers, after dark, on the streets of Manchester. Each night teams of runners in illuminated suits roam the city trying to film each other. As they duck out of the shadows they film the nightlife, streaming the footage online. On Weds 16 May ceramicist Lawrence Epps distributes 8000 little clay men into secret city locations for commuters to use in online artworks. Your Government has Gone to Sleep is a game of revolution and change by the Invisible Flock collective. And Larkin’ About present a gaming event which sees audiences in both Manchester and New York interact live.
Wed 16-Sat 19 May. City-Wide.
Handmade
Handmade is an interactive craft fair exploring the intersection between craft and digital technology – a forum for crafters, hackers and innovators to share ideas and practice with the maker community and the public. This unique event encourages visitors to create their own DIY artworks, learn new skills, and hear leading artists in the field of digital craft discuss their practice.
Saturday 19 May. Victoria Baths. Learn more.
