A hair and makeup salon at City Fictions gives visitors a free anti-surveillance and facial recognition makeover to make them invisible to ‘Big Brother’.

Adam Harvey’s CV Dazzle Anon Salon is a world first hairdressing and makeup salon where the artist applies makeovers to visitors using unique geometric designs, making them invisible to Big Brother’s CCTV facial recognition software.

CV Dazzle Anon Salon explores how fashion can be used as camouflage from face-detection technology, the first step in automated face recognition. These algorithms rely on the identification and spatial relationship of key facial features, like symmetry and tonal contours. With CV Dazzle, subjects can block detection by creating an ‘anti-face’.

Adam Harvey is at the forefront of a post Snowden generation of artists, designers and hacktivists. The work deals with the most current of issues in secrecy, surveillance, aesthetics and design.  According to Harvey, the method is effective at blocking the face recognition used by Facebook, Picasa and Flickr -- and it doesn't simply cause some mild confusion, it actually prevents the software from detecting any face at all.

Presented as part of City Fictions, a speculative near future city. Institution: salon.
