In the early hours of Wednesday 16 May 2012, 8,000 additional commuters took to Manchester’s streets in the form of miniature ceramic figures created by the artist Lawrence Epps. Placed across the city the figures were dwarfed by the offices and workplaces around them as they mirrored the hurried journeys made by their rush-hour audience. Everyone was encouraged to handle and take away the figures for their own enjoyment and share their thoughts, films and photos in response to the artwork online. An enthusiastic public quickly embraced the project, sharing their encounters and responses on the project site and on twitter using the tag #littleclaymen which was steadily trending on Twitter for seven hours.
