Loca: Set to Discoverable was an artist-led project on grass-roots, pervasive surveillance using mobile phones, which combined art installation, software engineering, activism, pervasive design, hardware hacking, SMS poetry, sticker art and performance.

Hacked mobile phones running custom software were fixed to lampposts and hidden in flowerbeds around the city. These tracked and communicated with unknowing commuters and passersby, following them as they moved through the city. Messages generated by algorithms responded to urban semantics, the social meanings of particular places.

“You walked past a flower shop and spent 30 minutes in the park, are you in love?”
