Sub.merge set out to experiment in immersive interfaces between sound, image, space and people. The goal was to develop the club environment through subtle interfaces which do not destroy the musical experience and without resorting to gizmos or gimmicks. Working with sound distribution together with visuals and lighting, the aim was to create multilayered events which the audience can explore as much or as little as they like. The event at ISEA98 was a laboratory for testing technical and creative innovations. Curated by Drew Hemment and Helen Sloan (a Futuresonic co-production with SCAN), Sub.merge provided a forum for electronic music and moving image makers where new and experimental interfaces could be trialled and played live, setting the wheels in motion for technical and creative innovations.
