Emotional Biodiversity Workshops

, Stockport Merseyway Centre, 11:00 - 15:00 on September 7th & 8th

A fun packed weekend of workshops exploring our connection to the landscape and biodiversity of Stockport, though creative making and play

Creative events space Stockroom opens its doors next year in the heart of Stockport town centre, hosting a year-round programme of events, from culture, literature, music and even stand-up comedy.

To celebrate all things Stockroom, visitors to Merseyway will have the chance to get involved in a selection of free creative workshops on 7-8 September, 11am-3pm in the covered mall.

Emotional Biodiversity Workshops

As part of this weekend of family friendly activity, FutureEverything will be hosting Emotional Biodiversity workshops, an extension of the Stockport digital arts commission by multi-disciplinary artist and international award-winning filmmaker Di Mainstone, whose artwork will premiere at the Stockroom venue in Spring 2025.

Inspired by UK Climate Psychologist Caroline Hickman’s term “Emotional Biodiversity”, this hands-on workshop explores our emotional connection to the landscape and biodiversity of Stockport, through the lens of soil.

During the workshop you’ll be invited to dig deep into Stockport’s rich soil, unearthing and decorating roots and bulbs (celeriac, ginger root, sweet potato, etc), before imagining and creating an entirely new species of bulb/plant life. You’ll be asked to consider the name of your species, what kind of environment it might inhabit, and whether it has a message for future citizens of Stockport.

The workshop is for all ages and aims to bring the community together. It will provide a space for participants to re-engage with their surroundings, connect the past, present and future, as well as reflect on the town’s heritage, innovation, and community.

Each family will get to take home their own creative arts pack for FREE, courtesy of the Rotary Club.

Other Activities

Grub Street risograph printing workshops, suitable for ages 6-100, are inspired by the Underbanks inky history of printing presses and printmakers. During these drop-in workshops we invite visitors to draw, write, and risograph print whilst we rummage through Stockport archives and discuss what life was once like. Images and stories will be collated into a publication which will be shared next year at the Stockroom opening and a special edition copy will be created for permanent display. The workshop will be led by illustrator and printmaker Heather Chambers, Co-Founder and Director of Underbank Studios.

As part of Stockroom Socials, Brutalist Banquet at Merseyway Workshop on 7th September is a fun hands-on workshop hosted by our neighbours (any more info to include?) Tickets are £10 each and include a delicious vegetarian banquet. Tickets can be booked online, just follow the link HERE
