Future Sessions: Trust in Invisible Agents (Ars Electronica)

Thu 6th September

How can art help us ask questions about the Internet of Things?

During Ars Electronica 2018, we hosted the second of our Future Sessions: Trust in Invisible Agents. In this session, we invited the public to join the conversation around themes of transparency, literacy, ethics and governance when it comes to the Internet of Things (IoT). Conversations in this space are often complex and layered in jargon, so our approach was to use art, storytelling and real-world examples to make these themes more relatable. Together we explored the challenges, opportunities and possible futures for the IoT within society.

The event began with an expert panel of lightning talks to inspire and add context to the conversation. After this, we hosted an interactive roundtable discussion, bringing together panel members with audience participants to debate the themes of the day. During the roundtable, the group investigated the value of art when it comes to innovation, in particular focusing on how arts practice can raise questions and inform real-world IoT technologies and projects. By the close of the session the group had come up with a number of ideas to shape the first iteration of a potential Manifesto for Art in the IoT.

The following day, FutureEverything Research Associate, Jason Crouch, delivered a talk at the STARTS Day micro-conference discussing themes of artistic intervention and presenting the work-in-progress manifesto.

Future Sessions at Ars Electronica 2018 was presented by FutureEverything as part of Create-IoT (Horizon 2020).
