Open call for Jordanian artists: [Digital] Transmissions

An exciting opportunity for artists and creative practitioners based in Jordan to engage with experts, learn new digital skills and create artworks to share at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts

[Digital] Transmissions is an artistic development programme, funded by the British Council in Jordan, for artists / creative practitioners based in Jordan offering them opportunities to take part in a series of online workshops and in person sessions and events led by established digital artists, learn digital skills, network with peers, collaborate, and create new work. It also offers a chance to share learnings, showcase work developed during the programme at a public event and exhibition at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, and connect with the technology industry and arts and culture professionals in Jordan.

What you will be offered

As part of the [Digital] Transmissions programme, participants will be offered: 

  • Conceptual and formal artistic development with established digital artists and technology experts 

You will get access to a series of online conceptual, critical ideas and technical workshops led by established digital artists from Jordan and the UK (8x workshops and an intro session in total to take place over 8 weeks). 

  • Intro to digital tools

You will get introduced to and have opportunities to explore / experiment with digital tools such as 3D visuals, AR, video game environments, data, AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning (ML) or working with data. 

  • Access to expert advice and mentorship

You will have access to professional guidance, critical ideas and readings, mentorship and industry advice focussing on digital art and culture, from established Jordanian and UK digital artists. 

  • Creative network and collaboration opportunities

During the programme you will have opportunities to network and connect with fellow creative practitioners and create collaborative work.

  • New work development and exhibition

The chance to apply new skills and develop and produce new work (individual and collaborative projects), which will be showcased at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts at the end of the programme (March 2023 TBC). 

  • Access to a production grant

£500 per participant towards the development of new work, as mentioned above 

  • The chance to be considered for a potential UK study visit offered to selected participants engaging in this programme, supported by the British Council in Jordan.

Programme components and Timeline

Part 1 - Intro session and online workshops

  • Monday 24 Oct 2022, 7:00 – 8:30 PM (Amman Time) / 5:00 – 6:30 PM (UK Time)

Intro session to meet the team (British Council, Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and FutureEverything), participants intros, meeting the mentors, and explaining plan and expectations (workshops outline, collaborations, presentation, evaluation, future opps)

  • Wednesdays, 26 Oct – 14 Dec 2022, 6:00 – 8:30 PM (Amman Time) / 4:00 – 6:30 PM (UK Time)

Workshops delivery (one per week, over 8 weeks) 

  • Weds 26 Oct: Workshop 1 (readings, context, critical ideas and intro to technical)
  • Weds 2 Nov: Workshop 2 (technical)
  • Wed 9 Nov: Workshop 3 (technical)
  • Wed 16 Nov: Workshop 4 (technical) 
  • Wed 23 Nov: Workshop 5 (technical and collaborations overview)
  • Wed 30 Nov: Workshop 6 (technical) 
  • Wed 7 Dec: workshop 7 (technical) 
  • Wed 14 Dec: workshop 8 (closing of technical sessions and brief outline of  individual and collaborative production expectations)

Post workshops check-in / proposals and mentoring sessions 

  • Early Jan – mid Feb [dates TBC]:

2-3x Brief check-in sessions with FutureEverything, Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, British Council and mentors to review collaborative and individual projects progress, advice & support 

  • Feb, before exhibition [dates TBC]:

Final check-ins with FutureEverything, Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and British Council before  the final programme exhibition at the Jordan National Gallery

Part 2 - Exhibition / public engagement programs - in person, in Jordan

Late Feb / March 2023 [dates TBC]

In the second and last part of the programme, participants will come together in person at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts to showcase their individual and collaborative work developed during the programme and take part in creative exchange and conversations with the public. 

The final Exhibition and accompanying talks, tours, dialogue and networking events will be co-curated by FutureEverything and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and will be open to the public. 

By the end of the programme, there will also be a chance to find out more about a potential UK study visit that will be offered to selected participants engaging in this programme, supported by the British Council in Jordan.

Who can apply and how

This opportunity is open to artists and creative practitioners working across all art forms. We welcome applications from artists based in Jordan above the age of 18 regardless of their gender, or background, and we encourage applications from women artists, and underrepresented groups, including artists with disabilities (visible and invisible).

*Participants who identify as having any kind of disability are required to clearly state that in the application form, in order to understand how to best accommodate needs.  

Participants should have working knowledge of English.

Participants should have basic computer skills and be able to use their own computer / devices during the workshop sessions and production for the final Exhibition.
