The Nature Directed Lab is a collaborative space to share and iterate insights and research into how we – as cultural creatives, change makers and organisations – can restructure our systems and behaviours so that Nature (the Web of Life) is an active participant and agent in everything we do.
As part of this, we are exploring questions that are at the heart of multispecies and environmental justice debate – from who speaks for Nature and how, to how we interpret the myriad ways in which Nature “speaks itself” and how we find a balance between human and more-than-human interests.
FutureEverything’s focus on technology brings an additional dimension to how we address these questions and model structural change with Nature as a decision-maker. Going beyond gimmick and pushing against technological solutionism, we are experimenting with the role that technologies – contemporary and ancient – can play as an enabler of multispecies collaboration and decision-making. In doing so, we aim to unearth new pathways and possibilities for technology to aid attunement, restoration and repair.
The Lab explores this cognisant of the fact that the same cultural narratives and power dynamics that enable tech injustices also play a role in environmental and multispecies injustices. The interactions between cultural, economic and socio-political forces determine whether technology is a contributing force in ecological destruction or an enabler of restoration and repair.
The exploration of this sphere is guided by Webs of Justice, our Declaration of Responsibilities and by our Nature Directed model. The learnings generated will also inform our Nature Directed Incubator service.
