The PROTO Masterclasses are a series of expert-led online sessions that took place in February and March 2025, designed to provide UK artists based in the North with a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from a diverse range of international artists, cultural leaders, and creative professionals, exploring key themes: collaboration and community, interdisciplinary approaches, sustainability & ethical engagement, and technological innovation.

'From Biohacking to Collective World-Making' with Mary Maggic

Mary Maggic is an artist and researcher, re-defining the role of institutional science in the construction of political, ecological, and somatic fictions. Mary’s workshop explores the transformative practice of biohacking and co-creation.

'Climate History and Technology' with Angela YT Chan

Angela YT Chan’s investigative art practice focuses on how climate change narratives relate to colonial histories, technologies and justice. Angela’s talk explores what it means to her to shape resistive counternarratives using creative digital tools and interdisciplinary methods in her current projects, “Critiquing a ‘sustainable military’” and “A Brief History of “Climate Tech”.

'Crafting Immersive Experiences' with Kinnari Saraiya

Kinnari Saraiya is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and dancer whose practice interweaves oral, visual, choreographic, and musical storytelling. Kinnari’s session draws on her extensive and multifaceted background, guiding you through her creative practice and methodologies.

'Scaling Artistic Practice through Production' with Alex Boyce

Alex Boyes is a multidisciplinary Producer working closely with artists and researchers to build, produce and deliver ideas in iterative and agile ways. Alex’s session explores scaling your artistic process, drawing on his experience delivering projects for institutions like Serpentine, The Francis Crick Institute and the Royal Opera House as well as artist studios like Jakob Kudsk Steensen and Keiken.

'Temporary Archive' with Whisper (Sammie Veeler)

Sammie Veeler is a Los Angeles-based artist and organiser who explores the political nature of technology and its role in collective action. Sammie co-founded New Art City, a virtual art space that has showcased over 6,000 artists. Sammie’s interactive online workshop explores alternative digital archiving strategies for media artists.

'How to Make Networks of Solidarity in the New Normal' with Dani Admiss

Dani Admiss is a creative climate leader, independent curator, educator and the founder of Sunlight Doesn’t Need a Pipeline. Dani’s participatory session is designed to equip you with a renewed sense of agency to build and nurture creative, supportive networks.

'An introduction to Online Game Creation' with V Buckenham

V Buckenham is a games designer and developer, and the creator of Downpour, an app that makes it easy to make little games on your phone. People have long created machines to predict the future, from Magic 8 Balls to indie games like Wishfishing, blending mystery, fun, and reflection. V’s workshop explores their history and design before making their own using Downpour, a new game creation tool from V.
