Profile: Papia Chakraborty

Contemporary dancer

I am Contemporary dancer, started learning Kathak since childhood. I finished my Diploma in Contemporary Academic Dance and Movement In Art from Rhythmosaic School and Dance Institute, Kolkata. There I received training in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and completed a certificate course from Gati Dance Forum – Body, Space Time – about aspects of dance technique and choreography.

My body of work in the capacity of a dancer includes Swan Lake choreographed by Ronnie Shambik Ghosh(Kolkata), Buddha by Ronnie Shambik Ghosh(Kolkata) and White Lotus Black Sand ( in collaboration with Beijing Dance LDTX), Under The weight and DEP choreographed by Dam Van Huynh(London), 1sq.ft choreographed by Surjit Nongmeikapam(Manipur), and Saavdhaan! choreographed by Mandeep Raikhy(Delhi), I presented my choreography Give weight to Me at PECDA2018, Dance Bridges Festival 2019. Worked in Foreign Body, a physical theater directed by Imogen Butler Cole(UK)in 2019, and also worked in Monsoon Project(research and experimental based project) by Nathaniel Parchment in 2020. In 2021 I took a part in CPI(Cultural Partnership Initiative) with the collaboration of KOFEC(South Korea), CID Dance(South Korea) and Attakkalari(India). This was the first time I choreographed and present my dance film “Metamorphosis” (yet to screening on official page). I also presented “Metamorphosis” as a performance (work in progress) at Prakriti Excellence Contemporary Dance Award 2022.
