Profile: Vincent Canning

Artist

Vincent is a sculptor / environmental artist based on the edge of Cheshire, bordering the Peak District. Whose inspiration comes from a combination of interest in nature, environmental issues, traditional hand-crafted skills and archaeological relics.

Vincent has worked with a variety of materials and techniques, early works involved casting with different and sometimes experimental materials, such as recycled paper-pulp and soap. And weaving with willow to make large pod-like sculptures. He is now interested in developing digital art skills, as an alternative way of producing and displaying work, and as a way of visualizing a proposal for a prospective commission.

The starting point for his piece of digital artwork for Stockport Stockroom is a piece of work he made consisting of over 100 butterflies cut out of aluminium drinks cans pinned to the back of a display cabinet, turning the cabinet into a sort of vivarium for creatures which have evolved out of our waste. Empty drinks cans litter the floor as if cocoons from which these strange creatures have emerged.

As part of the PROTO creative engagement programme, designed to support artists in the North in developing their digital skills and creative practice, Vincent has been commissioned by FutureEverything to create a new digital artwork. His piece will be exhibited at the new Stockroom venue in Stockport from May 23rd to June 30th, 2025.
