FutureEverything presents a new Flora Yin-Wong audio commission

A sonic documentation of our transformation toward Nature Directed governance and celebrating 30 years of FutureEverything

FutureEverything is proud to announce the release of a new audio commission by Berlin-based sound artist Flora Yin-Wong, documenting the journey of its pioneering Nature Directed initiative and the Working Group sessions. Nature Directed is a ground-breaking model that brings Nature on to FutureEverything’s Board and makes it an active participant and a guiding presence in everything we do. Our Working Group sessions were a convening of a global team of change-makers and creatives in art, environmental law, Indigenous knowledge systems, multispecies justice, technology, and decolonial practice.

At its heart, Nature Directed asks what it means to attune to and collaborate with Nature (the Web of Life) as organisations, communities and as individuals. This includes addressing complex questions – from who speaks for Nature and how, to how we interpret the myriad ways in which Nature “speaks itself” and how we find a balance between human and more-than-human interests. The sound piece offers a way into the considerations.

Flora Yin-Wong is an experimental sound artist and writer of Chinese and Malaysian heritage. Using field recordings and traditional early instruments (such as singing bowls, yangqin and kemence) with electronic processing and software she crafts atmospheric soundscapes that feel both ancient and futuristic.  In this new commission for FutureEverything, Yin-Wong uses her distinctive approach to create a piece that captures the ecological and relational depth of the Working Group sessions.

The track incorporates field recordings and subtle natural samples: cave-like echoes, wind, the crack of wood, and passages reminiscent of throat singing or ritual chanting giving the piece a spiritual undertone or otherworldly quality that feels connected to both her artistic practice and the ambitions that underpin FutureEverything’s new creative direction.

This audio commission not only offers a taste of the Nature Directed journey but it also pays homage to FutureEverything’s origins as an electronic music and technology festival. Now in its 30th year, FutureEverything was known for championing experimentation, digital culture, and underground sonic explorations. This new collaboration nods to that past/legacy.

As FutureEverything continues to shape its Nature Directed programme, the release of Yin-Wong’s piece marks a significant moment: a document of the organisation’s evolving governance model and a celebration of collective and collaborative learning.

The track will launch Mid-December and will be available via FutureEverything’s channels, with further Nature Directed updates to follow. You can find out more about the working group here and about FutureEverything’s model for nature-led decision making here.

A huge thank you to Flora and to our Working Group, for contributing to our Nature Directed work and to this piece.
