ArtsAPI is a major collaborative R&D project led by FutureEverything, the University of Dundee and Swirrl. The project has developed a new web application for arts organisations designed to show the value and impact generated through their networks. It aggregates, analyses and presents their data, helping the arts sector to create new and refined business models and propositions.

We believe that many arts organisations generate significant value through the relationships they create and sustain, but far too often this is not articulated or evidenced sufficiently to leverage support, income and opportunities. ArtsAPI aims to tackle this issue.

This ambitious and experimental project is being developed in collaboration with a core group of seven leading arts organisations of varying sizes and disciplines –Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Culture24, Redeye, Blast Theory, Forma, FutureEverything, and Islington Mill. A key objective for ArtsAPI is to be a strategic analysis tool for senior managers, benefiting organisations across the sector. The goal is to provide new and useful evidence based information, opening doors to much needed new revenue streams and opportunities for all. ArtsAPI will help organisations to make use of the huge potential value locked within their own data, and to change the perceived value of data from that of a necessary tool for accountability, toward its use as an important everyday tool for longer term business development.

In addition to creating the application itself, the ArtsAPI project will also offer a series of workshops, events, publications and training initiatives. Through this training and support programme, ArtsAPI will increase confidence and skills across the arts sector, encouraging more organisations to use data in new and meaningful ways. The project will release a series of freely available publications and how-to guides for the arts sector, to make the tools accessible to as many organisations as possible, whatever their current level of skill and understanding.

ArtsAPI is a year-long project by FutureEverything (lead arts organisation), University of Dundee (academic partner) and Swirrl (technology partner), made possible through the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts.
